Ralph W. (Sonny) Viersen, Jr.

Ralph W. (Sonny) Viersen, Jr. died Saturday, January 8, 2005 at his home. He was born in Okmulgee on November 8, 1925, to Ralph William Viersen, Sr. and Daisy (Means) Viersen. He attended Mexico Military Academy, Mexico, MO and graduated from Culver Military Academy, Culver, IN in 1943.

Ralph Served for 3 years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines and in Hawaii. Upon his discharge from the Army he returned home and attended the University of Oklahoma, receiving a degree in Geology in 1956. He worked for Pan American Oil Company in Lafayette, LA.

In 1959 he went into business with his father and was president of Viersen Drilling Company upon the death of his father in 1961. He has lived in the Okmulgee since that time. He was active in the oil business until his death.

Ralph loved to play golf, watch OU Football and the Chicago Cubs. He was also an avid horseman and for many years owned and bred Quarter Horses.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, R.W. and Daisy Viersen and his wife Louise Viersen.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Viersen, his son, Ralph W. Viersen III, stepdaughter Lenore Winn, Grandchildren R.W. Viersen IV and wife Bridgett, Angie Viersen Butler and her husband Scott and grandson Ethan Viersen. He is also survived by his step-daughters, Debbie McAlister and her husband Bill, Janet Shumaker and her husband Carl, Susan Shurden Henry, Shelley Minahan and her husband Mike, Stepsons Jerry Sanders, Todd Shurden and Mark Shurden, a sister Patsy Viersen Brown and her husband Thomas W. Brown his niece Betsy Brown and Nephew, Patrick Brown and eighteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at the Okmulgee Cemetery with The Reverend Dr. Norman Alexandre officiating. Services are under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee. The family will receive all friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Tuesday, January 11, 2005.

In Lieu of flowers the family has ask that memorial contributions be made to The University of Oklahoma or Okmulgee Memorial Hospital.
