"Dignity without compromise"


Newton J. "N.J." Gaines, Jr., Okmulgee resident, passed away Friday afternoon, October 11, 2002 at Midwest City Regional Medical Center. He was born March 3, 1922 to Myrtle Odom Gaines and Newton J. Gaines in Okmulgee. He graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1940 and Okmulgee Junior College in 1942. He was a Lt. In the Naval Air Corp. where he flew P.B.Y.ís and was a Primary Instructor in Olathe, KS. He married Eloise McKee in 1945. After getting out of the Naval Air Corp he entered the propane business with his father. In 1967 he became a Golf Professional and Greenís Superintendent at the Okmulgee Country Club and was an active member of the PGA. In June 1980, he returned to the propane business and took his son Randy in as a partner. N.J. served on the Board of the Okmulgee Country Club and was active in Jr. J.C.ís and the Quarterback Club in the 1950ís and early 1960ís. He was also a sponsor of the Okmulgee High School Golf Team for several years in the 1960ís. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. N.J. Gaines, Sr.

He is survived by his wife Eloise Gaines of the home, a son, Randy Gaines of Okmulgee, a daughter, Cheryl Johnson and husband Al of Warner, two sisters, Lorraine Hardin of Oklahoma City and Doris Kuykendall of Muskogee, a brother-in-law, Keith McKee of Norman, two granddaughters, Courtney Gaines and Christin Gaines, both of Henryetta, and three nieces, Judy Sutherland and Beverly Shipman and husband Paul of Harrah and Pattie Snyder and husband Gary of Oklahoma City.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the First Baptist Church of Okmulgee with Dr. Jerry Fielder officiating. Interment will follow at the Okmulgee Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimerís Association or the First Baptist Church Food Pantry. Services are under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
