Thelma Smith Houston died on Wednesday, July 4, 2007 in Okmulgee.

She was born in Okmulgee on May 30, 1918 to Joe C. and Sarah J. (Clemens) Smith. Thelma attended Oakdale School graduated from Okmulgee High School and Northeastern State University with a degree in teaching. She taught in the Okmulgee School System at Eastside, Westside, and Franklin Schools also Nuyaka and Morris for a total of 39 years until her retirement in 1980. She was married to Porter William Houston in Okmulgee on October 3, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1985. Her parents, and two brothers; Wallace Smith and Wheeler T. Smith also preceded her.

Survivors include one son; Andy J. and wife Alice Houston of Owasso, a grandson; Cody L. Houston of Mineral Wells, TX, two sisters; Dorothy Smith of Okmulgee, Zula and husband Dathan Vaughan of Muskogee, four nephews, two nieces and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 9, 2007 at 1:00 o’clock at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday 12-8 pm with the family present 3-5 pm. Interment will be in the Okmulgee Cemetery. Condolences may be made at mcclendon-winters.com
