Mercedes (Sadie) Grace McClendon 85, longtime resident
of Okmulgee, died Saturday morning, June 28, 2008.
Mercedes was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on March 22, 1923 to Genevieve
(Horning) and Coridon J. Quinn. She attended elementary school and high
school at St. Anthony’s in Okmulgee, received her B.S. from the
University of Oklahoma, graduated from St. Anthony School of Nursing
with an R.N. in Oklahoma City, and graduated from John Hopkins School of
Physical Therapy. She married James E. McClendon Sr. in Okmulgee in
1946. Sadie worked as an RN and surgery supervisor at Okmulgee Hospital
for 18 years, Henryetta Hospital for 3 years, she then worked as a nurse
for DHS for 12 years until her retirement. Sadie and her husband James,
after the sale of the Meadow View and Snow White Dairies, moved to the
Hot Springs, Arkansas area where they were in the restaurant business.
They came back to Okmulgee in 1963 and owned and operated the Patio
Restaurant and Drive In and Kentucky Fried Chicken… She was a member of
St. Anthony Catholic Church, Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of
America, Okmulgee Service League, and the Oklahoma Nurses’ Association
also served as president of the Oklahoma China Painters Association.
Preceding her in death is her husband James, parents Cordion and
Genevieve, sister Ruth E. Quinn, her brother, Corky Quinn and his wife
Frances, and their son Cris. Sadie was well known for her artistic
abilities in china painting and hand work in crocheting, knitting,
sewing, quilting and reading.
Survivors include her daughter; Gwyn and husband Darrel Dominick of
Stillwater, OK, two sons; Jim and wife Shari McClendon of Okmulgee, OK,
David and wife Pat McClendon of Black Forrest, CO.; seven grandchildren;
Brooke and husband Jake Burks of Edmond, OK, Marcy Jane McClendon of
Bethany, OK, Genevieve McClendon of New York, NY, Erin Dominick of
Knoxville, TN, Trey McClendon of Dallas, TX, Katherine McClendon of
Boulder, CO and Becca Dominick of Stillwater, OK. and many nieces,
nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Tuesday evening at the
funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 A.M.
Wednesday, July 2, 2008a at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Arrangements are
under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of
Okmulgee. The family suggests memorials be made in Sadie’s name to the
Friends of the Okmulgee Library in lieu of flowers.
