Luther Preston Shoemake

Luther Preston Shoemake 89, longtime Okmulgee County resident died in Okmulgee on Monday, January 13, 2003. He was born in Porum, Oklahoma on September 18, 1913 to Noah and Della Mae (Hulse) Shoemake. Luther married Mavis Gill on January 27, 1934 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He established the Shoemake Dairy in 1943.

Mr. Shoemake served on the Board of Trustees of East Central Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Inc, Okmulgee, Oklahoma for 33 years beginning in January 1970. During those years he held many offices, which included presiding as President of the Board of Trustees for 7 years. Luther also had many affiliations with other Cooperative organizations, which included serving on the Board of Trustees of Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, Inc., Anadarko, Oklahoma for 10 years. He also served on the Board of Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for many years, serving as President of that Board in 1986. He was an active member of the Morris Lions Club; one of the founding board members of M & L Water District, served on boards of several other community organizations and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Morris. His parents and a son, Don Shoemake, who died in 1993, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years Mavis Shoemake of the home,

daughter in law Nancy Shoemake of Drumright, OK, grandson Steven and wife Kristie Shoemake of Broken Arrow, OK, great granddaughter Kasey, great grandchildren, Twins- Adam and Emily, grandson Dr. Stuart Shoemake and wife Trisha, Drumright, OK, great grandsons Ryan and Aaron; Son Max Shoemake and wife Phyllis, Morris, OK, granddaughter Kristy and husband Willie Huckabee, Morris, OK, great grandsons Braxton and Brandy Huckabee, foster great grandson Will Huckabee, grandson Kevin Shoemake and wife Nancy , Morris, OK great grandsons Brighten and Connor, Son Jerry Shoemake and wife Lynda, Morris, OK, a brother in law, Max Harbison of Tulsa, OK and a sister in law, Lyda Henderson of Houston, TX.

Funeral services will be at the Trinity Baptist Church in Morris, OK on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 2 pm. Rev. George Christy and Rev. Garnett Cole will officiate. Interment will be in the Morris Cemetery. Visitation will be at the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home in Okmulgee on Tuesday, from 10am until 8 pm. The family suggest contributions be made to either the Trinity Baptist Church in Morris or the Morris Lions Club.

Pallbearers will be Steven Shoemake, Stuart Shoemake, Kevin Shoemake, Willie Huckabee, Neal Wise and Neal Brigance. Honorary pallbearers will be board members of the East Central Electric Cooperative, Inc, and Western Farmers electric Cooperative, Inc.
