Betty Withers

Betty Jean (Rose) Withers, longtime Beggs resident, died Monday evening, July 6, 2009 at St. John Medical Center of Sapulpa.  She was 84 years of age.  Mrs. Withers was born February 22, 1925 in Cromwell, Oklahoma to Orvil and Velma (Saladin) Rose.  She graduated from Beggs High School in 1943 and married Charlie Frank Withers on May 15, 1943 in Sapulpa.  She joined the First United Methodist Church of Beggs in 1938 where she had remained a very active member and held numerous offices until her death.  She was also a member of the United Methodist Women.  She worked for many years at Harvey’s Grocery Store and retired as a cook at Beggs Public Schools.  While working, she was an active partner in the family dairy farm, of which she remained the owner and operator.  She was a member of the OES Study Club and the Order of the Eastern Star, where she held the position of Worthy Matron in 1961, as well as many other positions throughout her life. 

Mrs. Withers was preceded in death by her father, Orvil Rose, mother Velma Hill, husband, Charlie Withers, an infant son, John Franklin Withers, two sisters, Frances Sadler and Loretta Perkins and a brother, Donald Ray Rose.  Survivors include her  daughters, Vicki Phillips and husband John of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Carol Naranjo and husband David of Bethany, Oklahoma and Jane Withers of Beggs, granddaughter, Susana Richards and husband Joe of Lewisville, Texas, grandsons, Mark Phillips of Denton, Texas, Tony Naranjo of Norman, Oklahoma and Brian Phillips and wife Caitlin of Oklahoma City, a great granddaughter, Julie Richards and a half sister, Ellen Kay Wesley.

Funeral services for Mrs. Withers will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 10, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church of Beggs with Reverend Josh Blanchard officiating.  Interment will follow in the Beggs Cemetery  Casketbearers will be Richard Mitchell, Bill Wylie, Burt Jones, Roy Griffin, Johnny Heredon, and George Everett.   Honorary casketbearers will be Kenneth Buckley, Wanda Buckley and Vera Baker.  Friends may visit the funeral home from 12-8 Thursday and 9-12 Friday.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Beggs Masonic Lodge or Beggs Order of the Eastern Star in care of the funeral home.  Arrangements are under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Beggs.  Online condolences may be sent at
